We were approached by Andrézieux-Bouthéon to ask Soham to forge a liaison, which we did – in 2005 – please see the “History” tab for details. We have strong links with Andrézieux-Bouthéon – namely the Pumpkin Fair – a huge event both here in Soham and in our French counterpart! Although primarily a friendly liaison the cultural benefits are enormous. We have regular French-themed events at our school, Soham Village College, fun activities such as the recent Quiz night, and forthcoming Car Treasure Hunt and visits by the French to share their culture with us, one example being the highly successful Tango evening in October 2009. Details are on the Past Events tab here on the website and pictures on the “Gallery” tab. And of course we arrange regular visits to France to visit our friends in their environment. The French members love to visit Soham. They are treated to local areas of interest, namely Ely Cathedral, Wicken Fen, Anglesey Abbey, river trips on the Great Ouse, the Wicken beer festival and lots more. Most of all, and probably most importantly, they are accommodated by members of our community – residents of Soham – who kindly let them stay in their homes and welcome them into their families. This is so much nicer than a faceless hotel, and much, much more fun! We implore Soham people to offer to join our wonderful association and offer to open their homes to our French friends, for which after all, is only a few days every year! We are self-funding and rely on membership fees, donations and revenue from events and are no longer supported by the council or by central government, or any other public sector body for our continuing friendship with our French twin town, and yet it brings so much benefit to us. We have French visitors enjoying our country, our town, our hospitality and our friendship. And we enjoy theirs. And this, for only £10 per year! Please consider joining. See the “Contacts” tab for details and call or email any of us to find out more. Alternatively come along to one of our meetings – see “Meetings” tab for dates and venues. Even better – let us have your views and news. We welcome suggestions, comments, contributions, constructive criticisms and praise!!!
See you soon!
